It is with profound sadness and love that we announce the passing of Rose Marie Monaco Pagonis on March 13, 2026, at the age of 87. Rose Marie lived a remarkable life, one defined by strength, love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and faith.

Born on September 13, 1938, and raised in the Italian neighborhood of downtown San Antonio. Rose Marie was the youngest of eight children to Blas and Rose Monaco. Rose Marie was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, a proud first generation Italian-American, and spent her entire life in San Antonio. She built a life rooted in community, and was known for her resilience, warmth, gentle spirit, and open heart. Mum, as she was affectionately known to many, touched the lives of everyone who had the joy of knowing and loving her.

Rose Marie's greatest joy was being a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. During the course of her career she worked in education, most notable at Mount Sacred Heart Catholic School. Mum treasured every moment spent with her family, attending school and sporting events, milestones, and celebrations. Mum made it her mission to never miss an opportunity to support and cheer on those she loved. She dedicated much of her life to serving her church, San Francesco Di Paola, to the extent she was recognized in 2020 with The Lumen Gentium Award. In her retirement, she spent 10 wonderful years as the receptionist at her nephew, David Monaco's salon, where she found comfort, laughter, and lifelong friendships. Rose Marie loved traveling, taking cruises, watching the Spurs and, most famously, loved playing in the casinos.

Rose Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Michael Gus Pagonis, her parents, and her 7 siblings. She is survived by her beloved daughters Elizabeth Garza (Hector), Deborah Walton, and Rebecca Duerr (Paul); her cherished grandchildren Addison Walton (Michelle), Haleigh Garza, Arianna Walton (Amanda), Halyssa Salisbury (Kyle), Havanna Garza, Autumn Duerr, and Mackenzie Duerr; and her precious great-granddaughters Melrose Walton and Marybelle Walton. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Thomas Bernatek (Helen), numerous nieces and nephews, and dear family friends.

Her passion, generosity, laughter, and love left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She had a rare gift of making everyone feel seen, valued, and loved. Rose Marie was always ready to enjoy the next adventure. She never left the house without her lipstick on, her nails done, her hair perfectly styled, and her earrings. Mum was always dressed to the nines with elegance, confidence, and beauty.

All services will be on March 21, 2026 at San Francesco Di Paola Catholic Church, 205 Piazza Italia, San Antonio, TX 78207. Visitation with the family at 9:30 am, followed by the Recitation of Rosary at 10:30 am. The Mass of the Resurrection will be at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow at the Christopher Columbus Italian Society, 201 Piazza Italia, San Antonio, TX 78207.

Rose Marie will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and eternally cherished for the love, strength, and kindness she shared throughout her life.
