Joseph L. Schmidt, Jr., 100, of Georgetown, KY passed away on January 19, 2022. Joe was born on January 16, 1922 in Tampa, FL to Joe and Olga Schmidt. After graduating high school in 1940, Joe enlisted in the US Army where he had a distinguished 22-year career. He served in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a Liaison Pilot and was awarded the Purple Heart. Joe also served as a Liaison Pilot during the Korean War. During his military service Joe was awarded numerous commendations and medals including the Air Medal and Berlin Airlift medal. Following Joe's military career, he went to work at the Lexington Bluegrass Army Depot where he was employed for over 20 years. Joe was known to volunteer in the community and was awarded numerous commendations with the Central Kentucky Blood Bank for his numerous blood donations.
Joe was married to Dorothy Shelley Schmidt who preceded him in death, and with whom he nurtured a blended family with her daughter, Susan, and two sons, Larry and Mike. He is survived by their daughter Joanna and son Joey, and his three sons from his first marriage, Danny, Sammy and Donald. One of Joe's two brothers and his sister also preceded him in death. His surviving younger brother Billy resides in Marietta, GA. Joe left eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
