H.B. Marcum, 93, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2026 in his home, as was his desire, with his son and daughter, Mike and Julie present. He was born on June 14, 1932 in Somerset, Kentucky, son of the late Henry Barrett Marcum Sr and Lectia Catherine (Burton) Marcum.
Somerset is where he was raised and lived until he left to attend college. Somerset was always considered home, where he is inducted into the Somerset High School Athletic Hall of Fame. H.B. received a scholarship to Florida State University to play basketball and football where he stayed one year before getting homesick and coming back to Kentucky to attend Georgetown College with his best friend Bob Neikirk, where he was a three-sport letterman his remaining years there in football, basketball and track. He was also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Georgetown is where he met his beloved wife of sixty-seven years, Patsy Ann (Jones) Marcum. Along with two of his teammates, Kenny Cox and Gayle Towles, H.B. moved his family, Patsy and new son Mike to Indianapolis, Indiana for a thirty-six year career in teaching 7th-9th grade Physical Education and Health as well as coaching football, basketball and later girls' softball. In the 1992-93 school year he received the Award for Excellence as Teacher of the Year at Fulton Junior High.
For many years during the summer breaks from school he was a lifeguard at Westlake Beach Club, where one particular summer he resuscitated a young boy from drowning. H.B. enjoyed fishing and bird hunting with his brothers and friends. When the opportunity was available, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren playing their respective sporting activities and other events. His grandchildren will always remember him for his granddaddy specials, flannel shirts and his slingshot capabilities.
