Ernestine Johnson was born, January 30, 1942 in Wheelwright, Kentucky to the late Ernest and Lillie B. Johnson. On November 23, 2025, the God of infinite wisdom, summoned his devoted servant to eternal rest.

Her place of birth was the base of her education, both academically and spiritually. She accepted Christ early in her life at Friendship Baptist church in Wheelwright, Kentucky. Her grandfather Rev. William Jones was the pastor of the church and she began her life-long walk of faith and dedication with the Lord.

She attended Palmer Dumbar School, graduated from Wheelwright High School and attended Kentucky State College, where she earned a degree in Special Education. After college she moved to Cleveland, Ohio and united with Mount Haven Baptist Church, there she faithfully served on numerous ministries and committees. Her love for God and commitment to his people were evident in all that she did.

Ernestine dedicated many years of service to the Cleveland Municipal School District as a Special Education teacher. Her excellence in education and devotion to students earned her the highest marks one could receive on their job evaluations, earning her recognition all the way to and from the Governor of Ohio until her retirement in 1999.

Following her retirement, Ernestine moved to Lexington, Kentucky where she became a faithful and devoted member of First African Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Dr. Nathl L. Moore where she served diligently as a Sunday School Teacher, sharing God's words with wisdom, compassion, and grace. Her unwavering faith, spirit and loving heart touched many lives.

She was preceded in death by three siblings; Sister, Deborah J. Hood and Brothers, William Dower, and Marvin Hood. However she leaves to cherish her loving memory. Sisters, Barbara Harris, Shirley Hood, Marvella Hood; Brothers, Robert Hood and Ralph (Blanche) Hood. Sister-in-laws, Vivian Baker Hood and Jill Dower.

In addition, a host of beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, church family, dear friends and former students who will forever treasure her memory and the impact she had on their lives.

A memorial service will be Saturday, May 30, 2026 at the First African Baptist Church (465 Price RD, Lexington, KY) at 10:30 AM, conducted by Rev. Dr. Nathl L. Moore.
