Obituary

Dorothy Jane (Wash) Mitchell, widow of William "Bill" Mitchell, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. She was born September 9,1925 in Versailles, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Vernon and Arline (Baldwin) Wash. Dorothy retired from Kroger where she served as head cashier for 28 years.

Dorothy was devoted to her faith and was the oldest living member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. She served her church as a member of the finance committee and enjoyed volunteering at the church. On April 26, 2019, the women of Cedar Grove honored her with "An Evening With Dorothy" where she shared stories and wisdom from her life. Dorothy found joy in cooking, gardening, canning and crafting. She raised quail and loved living on her farm in Stamping Ground. She found purpose in helping others and many times would use her love of sewing and ironing for the benefit of those around her. She lived her final years at her beloved Windsor Gardens. She enjoyed taking care of all the flowers around the property. She had quite the green thumb. Dorothy was kind, generous, faithful and full of spunk.

Dorothy is survived by her children Debbie (Mike) Hockensmith, Fred Mitchell, Ruth Smith, C.L. (Betty) Mitchell, William "Whistle" (Charlotte) Mitchell; her adored sister and constant companion Earline Stone; her grandchildren Christie (Neal) Pankey, Chad Hockensmith, Robin (Efrain) Arroyave, Tammy (Brian) VanSteenbergh, Natalie (Ira) Cumpton, Mark (April) Smith II, Russell Mitchell, Erin (Colin) Rice, Bryce (Elizabeth) English, Chasity Henson; 21 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family members, Shari Barber, Dean Barber and Debbie Walker; special friends, Forrest and Mary Hawkins. In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother J.B. Wash; three sisters, Nellie Sanderson, Teresa Downing and Myra Neeley; one daughter-in-law Nancy Mitchell; one son-in-law Mark Smith; two grandchildren, Regina McDaniel and Inger Mitchell; her best friend Helen Barber.
