August Culbreth "Gus" Peters, widower of Betty Sue Massengill Peters, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2025. Born October 24, 1930 in Atlanta, GA, he was the son of the late Carl Melvin and Lettie Eudora Culbreth Peters.

In 1935, Gus moved to Carnegie, GA with his mother to live with her parents, Jacob "Jake" and Nora Culbreth. In 1938, Lettie and August went to Charlotte, NC and lived for a year before returning to Carnegie, GA. He spent the summer of 1939 in Antioch, IL with his Aunt Bessie and Uncle Bob Hardiman.

He attended public school in Cuthbert, GA until 1943 where he went to Hampden Dubose Academy as a seventh grader and returned to Carnegie, GA and graduated from Cuthbert High School in 1948.

August received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Florida State University, received his Masters in Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and later earned his Doctor of Divinity from Brainerd Theological Seminary. He served at the Union Baptist Church (Cynthiana, KY) from 1958-1961, Carlisle Baptist Church (Carlisle, KY) from 1961-1967 and Hillsdale Baptist Church (Hillsdale, MI) from 1967-1992. He proudly served as interim pastor at Harmony Baptist Church (Jackson, MI), Bethany Baptist Church (Lansing, MI), Bethel Baptist Church (Adrian, MI), Dundee Baptist Church (Dundee, MI), Frontier Baptist Church (Frontier, MI) and last served as Assistant to the Pastor at Anchor Baptist Church (Lexington, KY). It was his joy to sing bass in the house quartet at the Gospel Barn for many years. His gospel quartet radio program was on the airways for many years during his time in Hillsdale, MI.

He proudly served as President, Vice President and Clerk of the Southern Baptist State Convention of Michigan, President of Southern Baptist Seminary Alumni Association of Michigan, the Michigan Trustee of Southern Baptist Radio and TV Commission. A proud veteran of the US Navy, he served on the USS Ajax in the Pacific and as First Officer aboard the USS Chewaucan in the Mediterranean.

He met the love of his life, Betty Sue, in September of 1958 and they married June 27, 1959 at First Baptist Church, Middlesboro, KY. They were married for 55 years until her death in May of 2014.

He is survived by his children, John August (Becca) Peters, Charleston, SC, Grace Elizabeth "Beth" (Cliff Hughes) Burnham, Jacksonville, FL and Dr. Carl M. (Renee') Peters, II, Nicholasville, KY; grandchildren, Jeremy Peters, Kyle (Ali) Peters, Brianna Burnham, Daulton (Savannah) Peters, Kendall (Cassandra) Peters and Hayden Peters; one great grandchild, Oakley Peters.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at Anchor Baptist Church, conducted by his children. Visitation will be 9 AM till service time. Burial will be 3:30 PM Tuesday at the Green Hill Memorial Gardens, Middlesboro, KY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Anchor Baptist Church, 3601 Winthrop Drive, Lexington, KY 40514.
